Connect to 2 networks from one machine

Scenario

We want to use the Notebook built-in wireless NIC to connect to another Wireless Access
Point and also use our PCMCIA Adapter at the same time.

What we did
  • Look for best TELSAT signal.
  • Position notebook on the roof to act as an antenna and access point. Mount it on a high platform with clear line of sight.
  • Use an Access Point with dead wireless function to act as a switch.
  • Run a cat5 cable to a workstation in the house.
  • Configure notebook network adapters. This is important.

How to configure?

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.

2. Right-click a network interfaces, and then click Properties.

3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.

4. On the General tab, click Advanced.

5. To specify the Metrics, on the IP Settings tab click to clear the Automatic metric check box, and then enter the Metric that you want in the Interface Metric field.

How to track an Application's version number

Most applications and drivers today will check online and update you about their latest version, but we were curious to work out alternatives.

There are different methods but we prefer by Google.com. The quick method is go to www.google.com and do a search on the [Aplication Name] + [Wiki].

For e.g. we did a google search on the term "Internet Explorer Wiki " and it resulted in the url: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer

In Wikipedia, they listed it's history we found easily on the application page content tree as shown below:

Source: Wikipedia

Also you do not only find the version number, but some detail history and other useful information about a Software.

example:

Internet Explorer 7 was released at the same time as Firefox 2.0, and overtook Firefox 1.x by November 2006, at roughly 9% market share.[84] Firefox 2.0 had overtaken 1.x by January 2007,[85] but IE7 did not surpass IE6 until December 2007.[86] By January 2008, their respective version market share stood at 43% IE7, 32% IE6, 16% FF2, 4% Safari 3 and both FF1.x and IE5 versions at less than half a percent.[8 - Wikipedia

We came across VersionTracker which was created by Kurt Christenson in 1995 as an Apple-only site but eventually expanded to include software related to the Microsoft Windows platform, but it does not convince us because users will need to download and install the application before running it. It's time consuming!.

VersionTracker Wiki

It competes against driver/program update sniffers DriverAgent.com, RadarSync, PC Pitstop, UpdateStar, driverguide.com, drivershq.com, SUMo, and to some degree with Download.com, Softpedia, Tucows, and other file download sites, as well as MacUpdate for Macintosh software updates.- Wikipedia

So more information are collected, like similar applications and ways of keeping track of an Application version number.
